Friends of Fort Flagler suffered a horrendous loss on Sunday January 26th. Her wonderful smile, mischievous
 laugh, endless energy, and positive outlook will be greatly missed but never forgotten. We loved her so very much.



Port Ludlow resident Carol Maki, 72 passed away on Sunday January 26th Carol Lee Beyer was born May 3rd, 1941 in Ashland Wisconsin to Liberty and Norman Beyer. She was raised in Superior Wisconsin where in high school she met her lifelong companion, and best friend of nearly 60 years John Maki. Shortly after getting married, they moved to Madison Wisconsin and later to Milwaukee. Eventually they relocated to Minnesota where they spent almost 30 years in White Bear Lake and Stillwater. While in Minnesota, Carol worked both as a book-keeper at a nursing home, and later established her own business as a genealogist. Upon retirement, Carol and John made their new home here in Port Ludlow. Carol’s intellectual curiosity drove her passion to constantly learn and explore. As a genealogist, Carol used these skills to help people learn about their own stories. Carol’s desire to see these stories preserved can be seen locally through the work the she and John have done with the Friends of Fort Flagler. As a travel companion, Carol helped those that traveled with her learn about other’s stories. Carol’s selfless approach to life ensured that an evening at her home would be filled with great food, good wine, excellent conversation, and a smile. Carol is survived by her husband John Maki; son David Maki, daughter in-law Molly Fee-Maki, her sister Sally Beyer and husband Larry Buchholz, sister in-law Kathleen Kindgren, sister in-law Karen and her husband Jim McGinnis. At her request, no service will be held. A celebration of Carol’s positive impact on her family, friends, and community will be held at a later date where we will heed her favorite saying, “Don’t look back, you’re not going that way”. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to your favorite charity.
