Flagler facts are things about Fort Flagler that may be useful at the annual meeting or just interesting trivia.
Considering the great accustics it's sometimes difficult to believe Battery Bankhead was ever intended for anything other than holding cocerts. Constructed between 1901 -1902 at a cost of $89,585.00 the battery was intended to hold 8 12-inch mortars. The guns cost $23,000, weighed 29,000 pounds and were capable of firing a 700 pound projectile 9 miles. Can you imagine how loud they were?
The battery was named for Brevet Brigadare General Henry Clay Bankhead who graduated from West Point in 1850. He took part in many Civil War battles and campaigns, and was brevetted for gallant and meritorious service in the battles of Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, and Petersburg. Following the war he served on the Indian frontier.
Bet he would be amazed at what's going on on a military reservation today.
