The Olympic Mountain Bike Team placed third of 18 teams competing at a Washington High School Cycling League race on March 25 at Fort Flagler State Park.
“Our team crushed it. They were so awesome,” said Doug Ross, director of the first-year team with 10 race participants from Port Townsend and Chimacum. “This is a delight. The kids are ecstatic.”
Four riders navigated the course well enough to make the winners’ podium. Top performances included Milo Steimle placing first, and Joseph Tweiten taking second in the freshman race; and Forest Montgomery placed third in the sophomore race. In the girls’ competition, Cassie Ross placed second among ninth-graders.
“Everyone finished the challenging course at Fort Flagler and did quite well,” Ross noted. “A big shout-out to the coaches and parents, who have done an amazing job getting the team ready.”
The team’s next race is the Washougal MX Challenge on April 15 in Washougal, followed by the Fort Steilacoom Invitational on April 29.
The new mountain bike team meets 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and 1-3 p.m. on Sundays at Blue Heron Middle School in Port Townsend; then it’s off to the trails. Any high-school-age participant is welcome. Seven coaches, all volunteers, teach skills, from trail technique to biking etiquette. The team is sponsored by businesses and private donations.
